Main generator units steam or gas turbine or diesel generators have to be run in parallel to share a total load that exceeds their capacity. Usually paralleling is carried out automatically but manual control is still in common use. Parallel running of generators is achieved in two stages synchronizing then load sharing. The generator already on the bus bars is called the running machine and the generator which will be brought into service is called the incoming machine. To smoothly parallel the incoming generator, it must be synchronized with the voltage and the frequency of the live bus-bars. The incoming generator voltage is set by its automatic voltage regulator to be equal to the bus-bar voltage. Fine tuning of the speed can now be observed on the synchroscope. The incoming generator is adjusted so thath the synchroscope indicator rotates slowly clockwise. The circuit-breaker should be closed as the indicator approaches the 12 o`clock position. When an incoming generator has been successfully synchronized the synchronizing equipment should be switched off. The total bus-bar load can now be shared between generators or totally transferred to the new machine. Manual load sharing is achieved by raising the governor setting of the incoming machine while lowering the setting on the running machine.
